Frequently Asked Questions

  • Students must meet federal (FMCSA) and Kentucky requirements, including:

    • Be at least 18 years old (21 for interstate driving)

    • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident / legal resident

    • Hold a valid driver’s license (Kentucky license required for testing)

    • Pass a DOT medical exam and obtain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate

    • Pass DOT drug and alcohol screening

    • Complete FMCSA ELDT requirements

    • Demonstrate English proficiency sufficient for safety, instruction, and testing

    • Pass all required Kentucky State Police (KSP) knowledge and skills tests

    Meeting program requirements does not guarantee CDL issuance; licensing decisions are made by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and KSP.

  • Students must complete 200 total clock hours and maintain at least 90% attendance (180 hours) to graduate. Due to the hands-on nature of the program, consistent attendance is required.

  • Training includes FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) theory, Online classes, onsite classroom instruction, range skills, and behind-the-wheel road driving, along with permit and skills test preparation in coordination with the Kentucky State Police (KSP).
